Advanced Certificate: Teaching Emerging Bilingual Learners for Classroom Teachers K-12
The Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Education provides licensed bilingual teachers who have previously completed master's level study in classroom instruction (K-12) with the opportunity to expand their study to include the ability to provide instruction for Emergent Bilingual Students in English and Spanish. Through coursework and fieldwork taught in both English and Spanish, students will gain an understanding of the challenges Emerging Bilingual Learners (EBL) face and develop the pedagogical skills and instructional strategies to support their literacy and content skill development in English and Spanish to effectively meet the Next Generation Learning Standards.
In alignment with NYSED’s Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Framework, this Advanced Certificate program provides teachers with the knowledge to build caring, nurturing communities that value the diverse cultures of EBL students and build success for all learners. This program will also give teachers an opportunity to reflect and deepen their understanding as advocates for EBLs, who have often been marginalized within the sociopolitical context of schooling.
