Teaching Early Childhood and Childhood Education for Teachers, MAT
The Early Childhood/ Childhood Education graduate program for Teachers leading to a Master
of Arts in Teaching offers an integrated combination of rigorous academic study and clinically
rich fieldwork focusing on the needs of all young learners. The program culminates in a dual
degree in early childhood and childhood education and prepares students to teach children from
birth through grade 6. The program offers a 12-month, full-time and part-time course of study,
combining hybrid and online courses.
The dual degree for teachers is intended to support the professional growth of initially licensed
teachers and assist their continued development as high performing, skilled, and passionate
educator-practitioners who advocate for their students, understanding the developmental range,
needs, and challenges of young learners, in alignment with NYSED Culturally Responsive and
Sustaining Framework. MAT candidates will become well-versed in all aspects of children’s
learning, developing the content skills and pedagogy to motivate, teach, and help all students
achieve their potential. This program develops teachers' understanding of the urgent mission to
develop equity based, safe environments in our classrooms and schools for all children to thrive.
MAT graduates will be well-positioned to make a difference in the lives of the children they teach.
