Teaching Emerging Bilingual Learners for Classroom Teachers K-12, MS
The MS in Bilingual Education offers licensed, prospective bilingual teachers a rigorous
graduate program designed to combine high level coursework leveraged with fieldwork that
teaches application of multicultural and multilingual theory and best practices for linguistically
and culturally diverse classrooms. Through coursework and fieldwork taught in both English
and Spanish, students will gain an understanding of the challenges Emerging Bilingual
Learners (EBL) face and develop the pedagogical skills and instructional strategies to support
their literacy and content skill development in English and Spanish to effectively meet the
Next Generation Learning Standards.
In alignment with NYSED’s Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Framework, this graduate
program provides licensed teachers with the knowledge to build caring, nurturing communities
that value the diverse cultures of EBL students and build success for all learners.
This program will also give teachers an opportunity to reflect and deepen their understanding as
advocates for EBLs, who have often been marginalized within the sociopolitical context of schooling.
